There are several boat tours to pick from, each with different options and pick-up points. Cartagena’s food scene is known for its mix of flavors, from seaside fish to locally grown beef. In Colombia, street food is a must-try experience, whether you’re sipping fresh fruit juice or eating a hot, delicious arepa. Another staple of the Colombian culinary scene is the empanada, perfect for a quick snack. Ceviche, a dish made from raw and cooked fish, is a popular street food.

Nestled at P.º Alfonso XII, 8, the terminal strategically sits within a convenient range of vital amenities.

Cartagena (Colombia) Cruise Port Guide (Review

You will discover birds from Colombia as well as other Latin American countries. The diversity of species live in environments including tropical rainforest, coastal, and desert. You’ll want to allocate about 2.5 hours to see the park, and if you can time it right, enjoy a presentation at 11.30 am or 3.30 pm daily. The Cartagena port oasis initiative won the Organization of American States (OAS) First America’s Maritime Award in the category of Sustainable Tourist Destination Port. The local currency in Cartagena is the peso, but U.S. dollars and credit cards are accepted everywhere. With an overwhelming world of choices, we understand you may need some personal assistance to plan your perfect vacation.

The Best Shore Excursion in Cartagena

The Port handles annually ~1400 vessels, ~3 million TEU containers, ~7,2 million tons of cargo. So, for things to do in Cartagena, Colombia, I’d recommend all of these for a cruise day in port, whether with Crystal Cruises or Carnival Cruise Line. The Port is around 4km (2,5 miles) from the entrance of the Old Walled Town and the taxi ride shouldn't take more than 15 minutes.

CRUISES FROM CARTAGENA COLOMBIA

If you’re sticking close to the city center and the port while docked on your cruise to Cartagena, Colombia, you’ll find plenty to see and do. Cartagena also has a robust bus system for travelers who are there for a longer period of time. Buses regularly take trips just beyond the city to smaller towns and other sights. Taxis here are generally affordable and can get you across the city faster than if you try to navigate the bus system.

But it was a new and interesting experience and I’d definitely want to return. Sometimes it takes that first visit to a distant port to learn what to do and then return. Crystal Serenity docked in the bland and dusty industrial area. The city furnished shuttle service for the 900-ft distance to the cruise terminal. Little did I know but the cruise terminal would be the quirky highlight of my day in Cartagena. If you’ve read any of my city guides, you know I’m not a big fan of a ship’s group shore excursions.

Cruise to Cartagena and stroll the Mercado for trinkets like traditional Colombian hats. If you're looking for jewelry, Cartagena is one of the world's largest producers of emeralds. The Oceanarium is the place to go if you want to learn more about the marine life of the Colombian Caribbean Sea. It is located on Rosario Island (Islas del Rosario), and will require a boat trip from La Bodeguita Pier.

Visit the imposing Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, relax on beautiful Caribbean beaches, or immerse yourself in the vibrant local music and dance scene. Indulge in delicious Colombian cuisine and let Cartagena's charm captivate you. There is a really nice duty-free store at the port terminal. You can buy Colombian emeralds, coffee, trinkets, and gifts. Another popular shopping spot is the Dungeons, where you’ll find plenty of tourist souvenirs to bring back home.

Wander through the bustling Plaza San Domingo and the Walled City. Visit the Palace of the Inquisition, a museum dedicated to cataloging the history of the Inquisition. If you’re craving an active adventure on your Caribbean cruise, head to Rosario Island for swimming, scuba diving, and exploring one of the area’s 27 coral reefs.

It was a hilarious cacophony of squawking and screeching by dozens of free-flying, rainbow-colored macaws. As I wandered the elevated wooden path, I found two anteaters rolling about in the sand and little monkeys scampering past, looking for fruit. Despite gale force wind, torrential rain and rough seas, we arrived on time into Cartagena, a fortressed 16th century Spanish city. This was my first visit to Cartagena and I knew little about this tropical city. Key West was our first port of call and then onto Cartagena, Colombia.

If you’d prefer an upscale dining experience, head to the famous Cafe del Mar for drinks, La Cevicheria for paella and seafood specials, or El Burlador Gastrobar for tapas and cocktails. If you’re curious about the history of the Inquisition and Cartagena’s intense history surrounding this period, head to the Palace of the Inquisition for an informative peek back in time. A guided tour provides plenty of history and context to soak up this piece of Colombian history.

I much prefer to wander around a city, stopping for lunch or a drink in-between window shopping and mindless meandering. Sometimes there is also a catamaran tour offered in the port. It costs 30 dollars and it gives you a quick tour of the town. Find the catamaran right next to the flamingo garden at the cruise terminal. Cartagena's amazing display of impeccably restored buildings of historical significance and beauty are a delight.
